Jack and the Beanstalk, Royal & Derngate, Northampton 24th December 2022
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The first panto i have seen at the Derngate since 2019 and it did not disappoint!
The show is headlined by Keala Settle, Bob Golding, Alex Lodge and Richard David-Caine. This was the perfect cast for this show as it was amazing. Its loosely set around the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Bob Golding is Dame Trott who is the mum to Jack (Alex Lodge) and the only possession they have is Pat the Cow. They run a Cow Wash, which isnt making any money.
They get a visit from the Giants Henchman who tells them if they dont pay he will destroy their village with his evil weather machine. They get the help from the fairy (Keala Settle)who gives them a magical watering can for use later.
To try and pay they sell Pat the Cow, but Jack gets conned and only gets some beans. He throws the beans into a compost bin and uses the magical watering can, which makes the beans grow into a giant beanstalk!
They use the beanstalk to climb to defeat the giant and destroy the weather machine. They find the weather machine, which Dame Trott manages to get stuck inside. The machine is voice-controlled so while Jack is talking about songs with weather in the title, the corresponding weather falls onto the Dame.
They find the giant who tells them he is actually imprisoned by his henchman, who helps them defeat the zombie pilot army!
They manage to destroy the weather machine and return home. They blow-up the beanstalks just as the evil henchman gets to the bottom. He begs for forgiveness and they forgive him!
The show had me in hysterics! Keala's dog was one of the funniest parts. Jack and Dame change their cow wash into a dog agility course but Keala's dog doesn't want to take part in the course, so Dame Trott has to do the course instead. The entire scene was so funny!
Another great scene was the bench scene. The main cast sit on the bench and sing "Always look on the bright side of life" but a member of the team gets kidnapped by the zombies!
This was another speculator pantomime the Derngate staged. You can tell it is slightly different company who produced the show, but that didn't change the fact the show was just fun! If you get a chance to see this show before it shuts, see it!
