The Cher Show

Updated: Mar 7, 2023

13th Friday, January 2023. Royal & Derngate Northampton

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Cher Show uses 3 different chers to tell the story of her life in different stages. I have to admit when i went into this show i knew absolutely nothing about her life but that has changed!

The show opens with the older Cher (Debbie Kurup) getting ready to go on stage and starts to think about her life. Her younger self's appear to show the challenges she has overcome in the past.

The first Cher is Babe (Millie O'Connell) and it shows her struggling at school and her home life, with her step-dad walking out on her. Her mum tells her to focus on her dreams.

At 16 she moves out and ends up friends with Sonny (Lucas Rush). They slowly build up their profile by releasing songs and starting the Sonny and Cher show. From this point their popularity goes higher and higher but its their relationship starts to turn sour

At this point Lady (Danielle Steers) takes over the role as Cher. Things take a turn when she when she finds out Sonny is owns 100% of the their company while she owns nothing. She decides to divorce him and quit the show. She works hard after, rebuilding her brand and restarts the Cher Show. She falls in love with another bloke, and has another kid. But because of her struggling ratings she has to bring back Sonny for help. This causes tension as Greg feels she doesn't let her hair down or take any drugs. They eventually split up.

More times passes and Debbie is back as the 3rd Cher. She carries on, and eventually falls rock bottom and has to resort to doing hairspray commercials. She then tries to her hand at acting, which starts off slow but does get her eventually recognised. She struggles to keep her love life going as the press constantly intrude on it, scaring off any bloke as the stress gets too much.

It hits 1998, with the funeral of Sonny and Cher has hit rock bottom. She decides to start touring again and promoting her back catalogue of hits to a new audience. The show returns to the present day where she is backstage for a show. Her mum gives her a emotional speech about how proud she is.

Throughout the show, all 3 chers are on stage but 2 are just to the side giving advice where they think it is needed and intervening in a situation they think is wrong

The show uses her back catalogue of songs brilliantly with nothing feeling forced. Throughout there is a slow build up to the grand finale song Believe.

The show ends with one of the longest Megamixs I have ever attended! The energy from the cast was so infectious and it was a brilliant ending. I learnt so much about her life, which I didn't know about.

I 100% recommend going to see this show if it comes to a theatre near you.
