Apollo Theatre London, 7th February 2024 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I just came back from seeing Wicked in London, for only my 2nd time ever, and I have to say it was still absolutely amazing! The musical is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, which tells the story of the witches of Oz before Dorothy arrived. It explores the friendship between Elphaba, the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the bubbly Good Witch of the North.
The cast was amazing, especially the two leads. Alexia Khadime as Elphaba was incredible, with a powerful voice and a captivating presence. She made me feel every emotion that Elphaba went through, from her loneliness and anger to her love and courage. Lisa-Anne Wood as Glinda was hilarious, with a perfect comic timing and a sweet voice. She balanced Glinda's superficiality and vanity with her kindness and loyalty. The chemistry between the two actresses was amazing, and they really brought their characters to life.
The songs were catchy and memorable, with some of the highlights being Defying Gravity, Popular, For Good, and No Good Deed. The music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz are brilliant, with witty humor and poignant messages. The orchestra was superb, and the sound quality was excellent. They have firmly earned a position on my Spotify Musical Playlist
The sets and costumes were stunning, with a lot of attention to detail and creativity. The stage design was impressive, with moving parts and projections that created a magical atmosphere. The costumes were colorful and varied, reflecting the personalities and backgrounds of the characters. The lighting and special effects were also spectacular, especially during the flying scenes. The Time Dragon above the stage is amazing, used only sparingly but when it moved was WOW!
The musical is not only entertaining, but also thought-provoking and inspiring. It challenges the stereotypes and prejudices that we have about others, and shows us that there are always two sides to every story. It also celebrates friendship, love, and courage, and reminds us that we all have the power to change our destiny.
Wicked is a must-see for anyone who loves musicals, or anyone who wants to have a fun and uplifting night out. It is one of the best shows I have ever seen in London, and I would definitely not leave it so long to see it again. If you haven't seen it yet book your tickets to see it in London or during its UK Tour! Get ready to be spellbound by Wicked!
